Text summarizer help and FAQ
Tips for better summaries, answers about languages and files, and quick fixes when something does not work.
Getting better results
What kind of text gives the best summary?
Clear writing with full sentences: articles, reports, study notes, meeting minutes and long emails. Text made of short bullet points, tables, chat messages or poems gives weaker results, because there are few complete sentences to choose from.
Why is my summary so short?
Short texts have few sentences to pick from. Try the Detailed length, or paste a longer piece. If your text has fewer than three sentences or about 40 words, the tool will tell you it is too short to summarize.
Should I add the title?
Yes, if you have one. Put it on the first line on its own. The tool gives extra points to sentences that share words with the title, which usually makes the summary more on-topic.
Which summary style should I pick?
General works for almost anything. Pick Business for plans and proposals, Study for chapters and lecture notes, Meeting for minutes and call notes, and Business learning for book notes and training material. You can switch and press Summarize again at any time.
What does "Show which sentences were picked" do?
It shows your full original text with the chosen sentences marked. This is the quickest way to check what the tool left out and whether an important point is missing.
Can I summarize a web page?
Yes. Copy the article text and paste it, or save the page as an .html file and upload it. The tool removes menus, cookie notices and footers as well as it can, but copying only the article text gives the cleanest result.
Languages
Can I summarize Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu or Arabic text?
Yes. The tool splits sentences at the full stops these languages use (। and ۔ too) and ignores their most common small words. The word lists are shorter than for English and German, so check the keywords list with a little more care.
The tool detected the wrong language. What now?
Detection looks at common small words. Very short or mixed texts can confuse it. Longer text usually fixes this. Mixed-language text still gets a summary, but the keyword list may include some everyday words.
Does it translate my text?
No. The summary is always in the same language as your text. Changing the interface language only changes the buttons and headings.
Files, limits and saving
Which files can I upload?
Plain text (.txt), Markdown (.md) and web pages (.html or .htm), up to 500 KB. PDF and Word files are not supported yet. Open them, copy the text and paste it instead.
How much text can I paste?
Up to 60,000 characters, which is roughly 9,231 English words. For a longer document, summarize it one chapter or section at a time. That also gives better results.
How does the PDF download work?
The PDF button opens your browser's print window with only the summary on the page. Choose "Save as PDF" as the printer. On most phones it is under Share or Print. Nothing is sent to a server to make the PDF.
Where are my recent summaries saved?
Only in your own browser on this device, and only if you ticked "Keep my recent summaries". They do not move to your other devices. Use "Clear history" to remove them.
Troubleshooting
I pressed Summarize and nothing happened.
Check for a message under the button first. If there is none, reload the page. If you use a very old browser, update it. The tool needs a browser from the last few years. With JavaScript switched off, the page still works but sends the text to our server once to make the summary.
The copy button does not work.
Some browsers block copying on pages that are not fully loaded, or inside in-app browsers (for example when you open a link inside Instagram or Facebook). Open the page in Chrome, Safari or Firefox, or select the summary text and copy it by hand.
My file will not open.
Make sure it ends in .txt, .md, .html or .htm and is smaller than 500 KB. Files saved as Word or PDF with a changed name will not work. Text that looks strange usually has an unusual encoding. Save it again as UTF-8.
The summary has odd line breaks or broken words.
This happens with text copied from PDF files, where each line ends with a break. Paste the text into a notes app, remove the extra breaks, and paste it again.
I see "Too many requests".
This only appears in the no-JavaScript version, to protect the server. Wait ten minutes and try again, or turn JavaScript on.
The page looks wrong after an update.
Your browser may still use old files. Reload the page, or clear the browser cache for this site.
One thing to always remember
This tool picks sentences. It does not understand them the way you do. A sentence like "the offer is not binding unless signed" can be left out, and that can change everything. For contracts, money, health, school and business decisions, use the summary to find your way, then read the original.
