Can I Quit My Job? Calculator
Your side business is growing and the job feels heavier every day. Before you hand in your notice, put in your real numbers. This checks 8 points that decide if you can leave safely — or what is still missing.
What this tool does
It looks at your last six months of side income, subtracts your side costs, and compares the result with what you need to live. It checks your weakest month (because bills don't wait for a good month), whether the income is growing or falling, how many months your savings cover, and four life questions that numbers alone miss. Then it tells you: ready, almost, or not yet — and exactly what is missing.
When to use it
- Before you give notice at work.
- Every month while you build on the side, to see how close you are.
- When someone tells you "quit and go full-time, that's how you grow".
How to read the result
- Ready (8 of 8): your numbers and your life setup both support leaving. Still pick a date and tell your employer properly.
- Almost (6–7): close. Fix the red points first — often savings or a weak month.
- Not yet (5 or fewer): keep the job and keep building. Leaving now puts your family's basics at risk.
- "Gap in your weakest month" is how much more profit you need in a bad month to cover basics.
- "Salary gap" shows how much less you'd live on compared with today. Covering basics is not the same as keeping your lifestyle.
What it cannot tell you
- It does not know your taxes. Self-employed income is usually taxed differently than a salary — ask a tax adviser where you live.
- Six months is a short history. Seasonal businesses need a full year of numbers.
- It can't judge your market, your health, or your energy. It is not financial or legal advice. Nothing you type is saved or sent.
Questions people ask
When can I quit my job for my side business?
A safe rule: your side profit covers your basic costs even in your weakest month, it has been steady for at least six months, and you have savings for six months of costs. This calculator checks those and a few more points.
Why does the calculator use my weakest month?
Because bills come every month, not on average. If your worst month cannot pay rent, you will be under pressure in that month, and pressure leads to bad decisions.
Why six months of savings?
A business can have a slow season, lose a big customer, or need a repair. Six months of basic costs gives you time to fix problems without going into debt. Work out your number with the emergency fund calculator.
Can I lose benefits if I quit myself?
In many countries, yes. Unemployment support can be delayed or reduced if you resign on your own, and health cover or pension payments may change. Check the rules where you live before you hand in your notice.
